In times like these, it is tempting to focus only on the issue at hand. But if you do, you do so at your own peril. As I watch what is happening to this great country, I find myself just shaking my head more and more while thinking, Mark Twain was absolutely right: “history does not always repeat itself, but it does often rhyme.”

My Igbo parents came to this great country from Nigeria. They arrived a few years after Nigeria’s independence from Great Britain. In Nigeria, it was a time of unprecedented cultural and political turmoil, which allowed politicians very much like Barack Obama to continue to seep into Nigeria’s political system. These politicians all promised a change from the past. And unfortunately, they ended up fulfilling their promises. What these politicians ended up changing was the very fabric of the African societies, which they had been taught to see as unsophisticated and inferior.

The government of Honduras rightfully squashed the dictator wannabe and was deported by the military on orders from the Honduran Supreme Court and Congress for his violations of the law and the Constitution.

Obama’s leftist proclivities are killing not only America, but other countries as well. This man must be stopped. He is a danger to society as we know it. I continue to receive messages from Honduran citizens upset at the international media for their distorted coverage of the situation in the Central American country. The people support the ouster of Manuel “Mel” Zelaya, who is considered a puppet of Venezuelan Communist ruler Hugo Chavez. They are mystified that an American president would want to return this Chavez puppet to power in Honduras.

One Honduran wrote: “The recent action taken by our Congress is highly supported by several organizations in support of peace and democracy: the State General Attorney, the Supreme Court, the Armed Forces, the private organizations and especially many young people. Mr. Zelaya broke the law on several occasions even after the Supreme Court stated that it was illegal. He had no respect for our laws and our Constitution.

Here’s the goal. If we can only get five billion people around the world to breathe 20% less oxygen per person, we would Save the Planet from Global Warming. Just like that!

Twenty percent less O2 going into your body means 20% less CO2 out-gassing, atom-for-atom. It’s just like cutting down the world population by a billion polluting oxygen hogs.

Things are not always as they seem, and they are almost never as they are sold. Unfortunately, even when presented with hard facts, many Americans still prefer the lie over the truth, finding the lie less scary.

Believe it or not, every crackpot notion is not a civil right in America or any other nation. In fact, most of the battles fought in the name of civil rights in America today, have little if anything to do with civil rights. Most have much more to do with special rights…and not the kind of rights that belong in America.

Allow me to introduce you to an important American icon by presenting two of his quotes for which he is famous in civil rights circles, but dangerously unknown to most Americans.

Quote 1 – "So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight for their rights, we'll be called a democracy."

Sounds like something any one of our founding fathers might have said, doesn’t it. But the author of these two quotes was no founding father. The first quote takes on a whole new meaning when placed in context with the second quote from the same individual.

Quote 2 – "I am for socialism, disarmament, and, ultimately, for abolishing the state itself...I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and the sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal."

Does this still sound like one of our founding fathers? - Both of these quotes belong to the same man, Roger Baldwin, a man whom most Americans have never heard of, though they know his works very well.

According to Baldwin’s official biography, he was raised by wealthy parents in the Boston suburb of Wellesley Hills. Family friends ranged from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Oliver Wendell Holmes and Booker T. Washington. Baldwin was raised as an "agnostic Unitarian."

The flood of illegal immigrants into California has made things worse than I foresaw.

In the Spring 2002 issue of City Journal, I wrote an essay about growing up in the central San Joaquin Valley and witnessing firsthand, especially over the last 20 years, the ill effects of illegal immigration (City Journal’s editors chose the title of the piece: “Do We Want Mexifornia?”). Controversy over my blunt assessment of the disaster of illegal immigration from Mexico led to an expanded memoir, Mexifornia, published the following year by Encounter Press.

Mexifornia came out during the ultimately successful campaign to recall California governor Gray Davis in autumn 2003. A popular public gripe was that the embattled governor had appeased both employers and the more radical Hispanic politicians of the California legislature on illegal immigration. On the Internet, a close facsimile of a California driver’s license circulated, with a picture of a Mexican bandit (the gifted actor Alfonso Bedoya of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre), together with a demeaning height (5’4”), weight (“too much”), and sex (“mucho”) given. “Mexifornia” was emblazoned across the top where “California” usually is stamped on the license.

My student, Tara Wyllie, has a permit to carry a gun in Tennessee, but she isn't allowed to have a weapon on campus. That left her feeling unsafe. "Why couldn't we meet off campus today?" she asked.

Virginia Tech graduate student Bradford Wiles also has a permit to carry a gun, in Virginia. But on the day of the shootings, he would have been unarmed for the same reason: Like the University of Tennessee, where I teach, Virginia Tech bans guns on campus.

My condolences to the students, faculty and parents of Virginia Tech. It is a tragedy that will not be forgotten.

The problem that I see though is the aftermath of this tragedy will lead to the media and the liberal lunatics all over the world decrying gun control.

Gun control is not the issue, unless you are advocating less.

If the students and faculty at the VT campus were allowed to carry a concealed weapon, which is the case in the rest of Virginia, the nut job that killed all these people, would likely have met his fate after the first incident, if not at that time.

The anti-gun lobby has it all wrong. If the idiot that did this knew that other students/faculty were possibly armed as well, this tragedy would have likely been avoided.

Shame on the media and the liberal lunatics for turning this into a anti-gun argument.

Oil — the huge profits it provides and the insidious influence it gives those selling it — explains most of the world’s worries over the Middle East.
No, that does not mean the United States is fighting in Iraq to get control of its petroleum. For all the charges of “No blood for oil,” the American occupation has neither been able to reverse a decline in oil production in Iraq nor alleviate skyrocketing oil prices worldwide. And, recently, the first new contracts of the now-transparent Iraqi oil ministry went to non-American companies.
What it does mean, though, is that the vast imported-petroleum needs of the West, India and China, and the resulting huge profits that pour into oil-exporting states, have super-sized the Middle East’s problems.

So long to a long time friend.
Daisy, my German Shepherd has passed.
I had to put her down on Monday.
She died in my arms, which I think is probably the way she would have wanted it. It was the hardest thing I have had to do in my life. I would rather be in combat, then have to do that.

Daisy was paws down, the best dog that I have ever had. Over the years, I have had a few dogs, and she outclassed them all.
She will be the standard by which I judge other dogs. I did that while she was alive, and I imagine that I will do so even more now that she has gone on to the greener pastures.

This is Daisy with my son, a couple years ago.
This hit the whole family pretty hard, even our other dog, Trooper was feeling low that day.

Daisy will be missed.

There has been a net warming of the earth over the last century and a half, and our greenhouse gas emissions are contributing at some level. Both of these statements are almost certainly true. What of it? Recently many people have said that the earth is facing a crisis requiring urgent action. This statement has nothing to do with science. There is no compelling evidence that the warming trend we've seen will amount to anything close to catastrophe. What most commentators—and many scientists—seem to miss is that the only thing we can say with certainly about climate is that it changes. The earth is always warming or cooling by as much as a few tenths of a degree a year; periods of constant average temperatures are rare. Looking back on the earth's climate history, it's apparent that there's no such thing as an optimal temperature—a climate at which everything is just right. The current alarm rests on the false assumption not only that we live in a perfect world, temperaturewise, but also that our warming forecasts for the year 2040 are somehow more reliable than the weatherman's forecast for next week.

In a major victory for environmentalists, the US Supreme Court on Monday rejected the Bush administration's view that the EPA has discretion to decide when and how to best respond to international environmental threats. The vote was 5 to 4.

Instead, the high court said laws passed by Congress to protect the environment require the EPA to swing into action to assess environmental threats that jeopardize human health and safety.

"Under the clear terms of the Clean Air Act, EPA can avoid taking further action only if it determines that greenhouse gases do not contribute to climate change or if it provides some reasonable explanation," writes Justice John Paul Stevens for the majority. He says the agency had offered no reasonable explanation to avoid the clear instructions of the Clean Air Act.

"This is the congressional design," Justice Stevens writes. "EPA has refused to comply with this clear statutory command." Joining Stevens in the majority were Justices Anthony Kennedy, David Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Stephen Breyer.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito dissented. In his dissent, Chief Justice Roberts focused on the issue of standing. Redress of the grievances spelled out in the suit are the function of Congress and the chief executive, not the federal courts, he wrote, adding that his position "involves no judgment on whether global warming exists, what causes it, or the extent of the problem."

WASHINGTON - A sharply divided US Supreme Court has declined to take up one of the thorniest legal issues in the Bush administration's war on terror – whether detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, are entitled to federal court hearings to challenge their open-ended detention.

Instead, in a significant victory for the White House, the nation's highest court on Monday let stand a Feb. 20 appeals court ruling that the detainees are not entitled to immediate access to US federal courts

Lawyers representing 45 of the 385 detainees at the terror detention camp at the US Naval base at Guantanamo had asked the justices to take up the case on an expedited basis. They wanted the high court to hear arguments during a special oral argument session in early May so a decision could be released by the term's end in late June.

But the court refused to wade into the controversy at all. Instead, the detainees must now exhaust the legal and other avenues established by Congress and the military at a federal appeals court in Washington before bringing their cases to the nation's highest court.

Colorado Congressman Tancredo Announces 2008 White House Campaign

DES MOINES, Iowa — Criticizing other GOP candidates as weak in their efforts to stop illegal immigration, Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo announced Monday he would seek the Republican presidential nomination.

"The political elite in Washington have chosen to ignore this phenomenon," he said.

Tancredo, a congressman who has gained prominence in recent years for his staunch stance against illegal immigration, said immigration would be the primary focus of his campaign.

Italy Swapped 5 Jailed Taliban for a Hostage

ROME, March 21 —An Italian journalist who was held hostage for 15 days by the Taliban in lawless southern Afghanistan was ransomed for five Taliban prisoners, the Italian government and Afghan officials confirmed Wednesday.

It appears to be the first time prisoners have been openly exchanged for a hostage in the wars that the United States and its allies are fighting there and in Iraq, and the move drew immediate criticism from Washington and London, and from other European capitals.

“We don’t negotiate with terrorists, and we don’t advise others to do so either,” said the State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack.

A senior Bush administration official said the prisoners exchanged had been held by the Afghan government, not by NATO, which is directing the allied military in Afghanistan. The official said he did not believe that NATO officials in Afghanistan had been formally alerted before the exchange.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with the Italian foreign minister, Massimo D’Alema, in Washington on Monday, the day the hostage, Daniele Mastrogiacomo, 52, of the leftist newspaper La Repubblica, was released. It was not clear whether they discussed an exchange.

Though it may have saved a life, the ransom has set off a worried debate in Italy and in other countries with soldiers, reporters and aid workers in danger zones.

The exchange sent “the wrong signal to prospective hostage takers,” a spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office told Reuters.

A letter from the Chief of Chaplains at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

I have had enough and am going to give my perspective on the news about Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Please understand that I am speaking for myself and I am responsible for my thoughts alone. The news media and politicians are making it sound like Walter Reed is a terrible place and the staff here has been abusing our brave wounded soldiers; what a bunch of bull!

I am completing my 24th year of service in the Army next month so you decide for yourself if I have the experience to write about this topic. I have been the senior clinical chaplain at Walter Reed for four years and will leave to go back to the infantry this summer. I supervise the chaplain staff inside Walter Reed that cares for the 200 inpatients, the 650+ daily outpatients from the war who come to us for medical care, the 4000+ staff, and over 3000 soldiers and their families that come for clinical appointments daily.

Walter Reed has cared for over 5500 wounded from the war. I cannot count the number of sick and non-battle injured that have come through over that timeframe. The staff at this facility has done an incredible job at the largest US military medical center with the worst injured of the war. We have cared for over 400 amputees and their families. I am privileged to serve the wounded, their families, and our staff.

When the news about building 18 broke I was on leave. I was in shock when the news broke. We in the chaplains office in Walter Reed, as well as the majority of people at Walter Reed, did not know anyone was in building 18. I didn't even know we had a building 18. How can that happen? Walter Reed is over 100 acres of 66 buildings on two installations. Building 18 is not on the installation of Walter Reed and was believed to be closed years ago by our department.

The fact that some leaders in the medical brigade that is in charge of the outpatients put soldiers in there is terrible. That is why the company commander, first sergeant, and a group of platoon leaders and platoon sergeants were relieved immediately. They failed their soldiers and the Army. The commanding general was later relieved (more about this) and his sergeant major has been told to move on--if he gets to. The brigade sergeant major was relieved and more reliefs are sure to come and need to.

As any leader knows, if you do not take care of soldiers, lie, and then try to cover it up, you are not worthy of the commission you hold and should be sent packing. I have no issue, and am actually proud, that they did relieve the leaders they found who knew of the terrible conditions some of our outpatients were enduring. The media is making it sound like these conditions are rampant at Walter Reed and nothing could be further from the truth. We need improvements and will now get them. I hate it that it took this to make it happen...

NOTE THE TIMELINE HERE

The Army and the media made MG Weightman, our CG, out to be the problem and fired him. This was a great injustice. He was only here for six months, is responsible for military medical care in the 20 Northeast states, wears four "hats" of responsibilities, and relies on his subordinate leaders to know what is happening in their areas of responsibilities. He has a colonel that runs the hospital (my hospital commander), a colonel that runs the medical brigade (where the outpatient wounded are assigned and supposedly cared for), and a colonel that is responsible to run the garrison and installation.

What people don't know is that he was making many changes as he became aware of them and had requested money to fix other places on the installation. The Army did not come through until four months after he asked for the money, remember that he was here only six months, which was only days before they relieved him. His leaders responsible for outpatient care did not tell him about onditions in building 18. He has been an incredible leader who really cares about the wounded, their families, and our staff. I cannot say the same about a former commander, who was my first commander here at Walter Reed, and definitely knew about many problems and is in the position to fix them and he did not.

MG Weightman also should not be held responsible for the military's unjust and inefficient medical board system and the problems in the VA system. We lost a great leader and passionate man who showed he had the guts to make changes and was doing so when he was made the scapegoat for others.

What I am furious about is that the media is making it sound like all of Walter Reed is like building 18. Nothing could be further from the truth. No system is perfect but the medical staff provides great care in this hospital. What needs to be addressed, and finally will, is the bureaucratic garbage that all soldiers are put through going into medical boards and medical retirements. Congress is finally giving the money that people have asked for at Walter Reed for years to fix places on the installations and address shortcomings. What they don't want you to know is Congress caused many problems by the BRAC process saying they were closing Walter Reed.

We cannot keep nor attract all the quality people we need at Walter Reed when they know this place will close in several years and they are not promised a job at the new hospital. Then they did this thing called A76 where they fired many of the workers here for a company of contractors, IAP, to get a contract to provide care outside the hospital proper. The company, which is responsible for maintenance, only hired half the number of people as there were originally assigned to maintenance areas to save money. Walter Reed leadership fought the A76 and BRAC process for years, but lost. Congress instituted the BRAC and A76 process; not the leadership of Walter Reed.

What I wish everyone would also hear is that for every horror story we are now hearing about in the media that truly needs to be addressed, you are not hearing about the hundreds of other wounded and injured soldiers who tell a story of great care they received. You are not hearing about the incredibly high morale of our troops and the fact that most of them want to go back, be with their teammates, and finish the job properly. You should be very proud of the wounded troopers we have at Walter Reed . They make me so proud to be in the Army and I will fight to get their story out.

I want you to hear the whole story because our wounded, their families, our Army, and the nation need to know that many in the media and select politicians have an agenda. Forget agendas and make the changes that have been needed for years to fix problems in every military hospital and the VA system. The poor leaders will be identified and sent packing and good riddance to them. I wish the same could be said for the politicians and media personalities who are also responsible but now want it to look like they are very concerned. Where have they been for the last four years? I am ashamed of what they all did and the pain it has caused many to think that everyone is like that.

Please know that you are not hearing the whole story. Please know that there are thousands of dedicated soldiers and civilian medical staff caring for your soldiers and their families. When I leave here I will end up deploying. When soldiers in my division have to go to Walter Reed from the battlefield, I know they will get great medical care.

I pray that you know the same thing.

In a newspaper interview Monday, Marine Gen. Peter Pace had likened homosexuality to adultery and said the military should not condone it by allowing gays to serve openly in the military.

"General Pace's comments are outrageous, insensitive and disrespectful to the 65,000 lesbian and gay troops now serving in our armed forces," the advocacy group Servicemembers Legal Defense Network said in a statement on its Web site.

The group has represented some service members dismissed from the military for their sexual orientation.

Pace, chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff, made his remarks in an interview Monday with the Chicago Tribune. He was responding to a question about the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that allows gays and lesbians to serve if they keep their sexual orientation private and don't engage in homosexual acts.

Pace said he supports the policy, which prohibits commanders from asking about a person's sexual orientation. Over the years thousands have been dismissed under this policy, signed into law by President Clinton in 1994.

People who violate immigration laws are more likely to violate other laws, according to an immigration reform group that said the findings differ from previous studies showing that immigrants to the United States commit fewer crimes.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) said these previous studies - especially one last month by the Immigration Policy Center (IPC) - "are misleading because they lump legal and illegal immigrants together."
"The use of that [U.S. Census Bureau] data is virtually guaranteed to demonstrate a lower incidence of criminal activity because of the screening process to which legal immigrants and long-term foreign residents are subjected," Jack Martin, special projects director for FAIR, told Cybercast News Service.
Martin noted that legal immigrants are required to submit police reports and records of any criminal convictions that could exclude them from being issued a U.S. visa. Furthermore, non-immigrants planning to visit the U.S. and applying for a visa are also required to disclose any past criminal activity on their part.

WASHINGTON - A federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia's long-standing handgun ban Friday, rejecting the city's argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias.
In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment "are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual's enjoyment of the right contingent upon his or her continued intermittent enrollment in the militia."

The court also ruled the D.C. requirement that registered firearms be kept unloaded, disassembled and under trigger lock was unconstitutional.

In 2004, a lower-court judge had told six city residents that they did not have a constitutional right to own handguns. The plaintiffs include residents of high-crime neighborhoods who wanted the guns for protection.

Iraq war mirrors past.

Given all of this country’s past wars involving intelligence failures, tactical and strategic blunders, congressional fights and popular anger at the president, Iraq and the rising furor over it are hardly unusual.

Imagine if the House of Representatives had debated a resolution to authorize the president’s use of force in Iraq only after the bombs were already falling. And what if after the debate, in the middle of the war, with our troops already in combat, Congress had suddenly denied such approval?

That is precisely what happened to President Clinton during the Serbian war of 1999. Neither the Senate nor the House agreed to sanction the administration’s ongoing preemptive bombing campaign against Serbia. That congressional rebuke prompted liberal commentator Mark Shields to scoff on PBS Newshour that American troops were “putting their life on the line, and (the Congress) are saying, we’re not with you.”

HARD-CORE global warming sceptics will descend on Canberra today for the release of a book claiming environmentalism is the new religion.

Former mining executive Arvi Parbo will launch Ray Evans' new publication, Nine Facts About Climate Change, at a function at Parliament House.

The book claims climate change is nothing new and declares Howard Government investments in solar power and in cleaning up coal a "complete waste of taxpayers' money".

"Environmentalism has largely superseded Christianity as the religion of the upper classes in Europe and to a lesser extent in the United States," Mr Evans says in the publication.

"It is a form of religious belief which fosters a sense of moral superiority in the believer, but which places no importance on telling the truth," he says.

"The global warming scam has been, arguably, the most extraordinary example of scientific fraud in the postwar period."

WASHINGTON - District residents have been the guinea pigs in a failed 30-year-old experiment in social engineering. Three decades of strict gun control laws have not made the capital city’s streets safer. On the contrary, since 1976, D.C.’s murder rate has increased 32 percent, and violent crimes committed during the first few weeks of 2007 by gun-wielding thugs are up a staggering 50 percent over the same period last year.

None other than former Mayor Marion Barry, now representing Ward 8 on the D.C. Council, is waving the white flag of surrender by introducing legislation to provide potential victims a limited window of opportunity to arm themselves in self defense. “We are in the midst of a gun-violence epidemic,” Barry said. Everybody but the criminals are abiding by the city’s gun control laws [which] have long been among the toughest in the nation. Not only are District residents forbidden from owning firearms not registered before 1977, they must also keep legal rifles and shotguns at home, unloaded, disassembled and useless against an armed intruder.
Barry deserves credit for stating the obvious, considering that most city officials shrink from accounting for the 2,656 illegal firearms recovered last year by the Metropolitan Police Department — weapons current gun control laws were supposed to keep out of the city.

Time for the rest of the country to wake the hell up and arm the law abiding citizens.
I may live in a liberal lunatic haven, but at least I can still own a gun.
This screwed up state isn't much better. The assault weapons ban is also ludicrous.

This was expected: but the good news is, the 40-60 Republican defectors that the Democrats had been predicting failed to materialize. Only seventeen Republicans voted for the resolution --- and two Democrats broke ranks to vote against it.

Don’t be misled: There is no global-warming consensus among scientists.

If you take the mainstream media seriously, you might think that every important scientist believes that “global warming” poses a great threat, and that we need to make drastic changes in the way we live, in order to avoid catastrophes to the environment, to various species, and to ourselves.

The media play a key role in perpetuating such beliefs. Often they seize upon every heat wave to hype global warming, but see no implications in record-setting cold weather, such as many places have been experiencing lately.

Remember how the unusually large number of hurricanes a couple of years ago was hyped in the media as being a result of global warming, with more such hurricanes being predicted to return the following year and the years thereafter?

But, when not one hurricane struck the United States all last year, the media had little or nothing to say about the false predictions they had hyped. It’s heads I win and tails you lose.

MIAMI — The NBA banished Tim Hardaway from All-Star weekend in Las Vegas because of his anti-gay remarks.

Hardaway, who played in five All-Star games during the 1990s, was already in Las Vegas and scheduled to make a series of public appearances this week on behalf of the league. But after saying, "I hate gay people" during a radio interview, commissioner David Stern stepped in.

"It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," Stern said in a statement Thursday.

Hardaway apologized for his comments, which came a week after John Amaechi became the first former NBA player to say he was gay.

"As an African-American, I know all too well the negative thoughts and feelings hatred and bigotry cause," Hardaway said Thursday in a statement issued by his agent. "I regret and apologize for the statements that I made that have certainly caused the same kinds of feelings and reactions.

Global Warming, as we think we know it, doesn't exist. And I am not the only one trying to make people open up their eyes and see the truth. But few listen, despite the fact that I was one of the first Canadian Ph.D. in Climatology and I have an extensive background in climatology, especially the reconstruction of past climates and the impact of climate change on human history and the human condition. Few listen, even though I have a Ph.D, (Doctor of Science) from the University of London, England and was a climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg. For some reason (actually for many), the World is not listening. Here is why.

What would happen if tomorrow we were told that, after all, the Earth is flat? It would probably be the most important piece of news in the media and would generate a lot of debate. So why is it that when scientists who have studied the Global Warming phenomenon for years say that humans are not the cause nobody listens? Why does no one acknowledge that the Emperor has no clothes on?

Believe it or not, Global Warming is not due to human contribution of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This in fact is the greatest deception in the history of science. We are wasting time, energy and trillions of dollars while creating unnecessary fear and consternation over an issue with no scientific justification. For example, Environment Canada brags about spending $3.7 billion in the last five years dealing with climate change almost all on propaganda trying to defend an indefensible scientific position while at the same time closing weather stations and failing to meet legislated pollution targets.

No sensible person seeks conflict, especially with governments, but if we don't pursue the truth, we are lost as individuals and as a society. That is why I insist on saying that there is no evidence that we are, or could ever cause global climate change. And, recently, Yuri A. Izrael, Vice President of the United Nations sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirmed this statement. So how has the world come to believe that something is wrong?

(CNSNews.com) - At a time when the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is censuring free market organizations for accepting donations from ExxonMobil, critics have turned the spotlight back onto the UCS, its left-wing positions, and its own funding practices.

In a recent report, the UCS charged that organizations are using oil industry money to create public uncertainty about what it calls "consensus" about climate change and the role of human activity in affecting temperatures see related story. Organizations named in the report have denied the claims.

The UCS describes itself as an "alliance" of over 200,000 citizens and scientists that initially came together in 1969. It integrates "independent scientific research" with "citizen action" for the purpose of developing and implementing "changes to government policy, corporate practices and consumer choices."

But critics say it is an openly political group.

According to James Dellinger, executive director of Greenwatch - a project of the Capital Research Center - the UCS has a long financial association with elements that have a "partisan view of science."

David Martosko, executive director of ActivistCash.com - a division of the Center for Consumer Freedom - agrees. He told Cybercast News Service the UCS would be "more aptly named the Union of Pro-Regulation, Anti-Business Scientists."

"The president does not have the authority to launch military action in Iran without first seeking congressional authorization," the Senate majority leader said, standing next to Speaker Pelosi.

The present situation differs from the one 57 years ago in that the enemy, in this case Iran, is already in Iraq. The Iranians are manning outposts our GIs are raiding. The Iranians are infiltrating the Iraqi government and interior ministry. But the stakes for the American interest are similarly high. And there is enough ambiguity about America's intentions in Iraq in light of the Democratic victory in November that Mr. Reid's remarks could have the same devastating effects as Mr. Acheson's.

I have been in operational meteorology since 1978, and I know dozens and dozens of broadcast meteorologists all over the country. Our big job: look at a large volume of raw data and come up with a public weather forecast for the next seven days. I do not know of a single TV meteorologist who buys into the man-made global warming hype. I know there must be a few out there, but I can’t find them. Here are the basic facts you need to know:

*Billions of dollars of grant money is flowing into the pockets of those on the man-made global warming bandwagon. No man-made global warming, the money dries up. This is big money, make no mistake about it. Always follow the money trail and it tells a story. Even the lady at “The Weather Channel” probably gets paid good money for a prime time show on climate change. No man-made global warming, no show, and no salary. Nothing wrong with making money at all, but when money becomes the motivation for a scientific conclusion, then we have a problem. For many, global warming is a big cash grab.

Where do you think this money is coming from? All the rich people, right? Not even close.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) on Monday proposed a system of universal health insurance for Californians that would make the nation's most populous state the third to guarantee medical coverage for all its residents.

The only guarantee I see in this is higher taxes for every working stiff in the state, and a crappier health care system than the one we presently have.
If you think the lines are long in hospitals now, wait until this goes in to effect.

"Prices for health care and insurance are rising twice as fast as inflation, twice as fast as wages. That is a terrible drain on everyone, and it is a drain on our economy," Schwarzenegger said. "My solution is that everyone in California must have insurance. If you can't afford it, the state will help you buy it, but you must be insured."

That isn't a solution, it is a bigger problem. Giving everyone health care insurance whether they pay for it, or I do, isn't solving anything. It is merely creating an environment conducive to more illegal immigration, and one in which I will begin looking into leaving this state. Sorry, but this state isn't the be all state. I refuse to pay for someone else's issues, I have my own.

Are Nurses Pushing State Run Health Care?

New York Medicaid Fraud May Reach Into Billions

This is a prime example of what will happen when this state decides to add universal health care to its many socialist agendas.

It was created 40 years ago to provide health care for the poorest New Yorkers, offering a lifeline to those who could not afford to have a baby or a heart attack. But in the decades since, New York State's Medicaid program has also become a $44.5 billion target for the unscrupulous and the opportunistic.

Unscrupulous and opportunistic, eh? Sounds like politicians to me, but hey, I guess doctors and dentists can screw the state over just as easily.

It has drawn dentists like Dr. Dolly Rosen, who within 12 months somehow built the state's biggest Medicaid dental practice out of a Brooklyn storefront, where she claimed to have performed as many as 991 procedures a day in 2003. After The New York Times discovered her extraordinary billings through a computer analysis and questioned the state about them, Dr. Rosen and two associates were indicted on charges of stealing more than $1 million from the program.

Gov. seeks sweeping health system reforms

Didn't Hillary try proposing this crap on a national level?

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today proposed upending just about every portion of the healthcare industry in one of the country's most elaborate efforts at holding down medical costs and expanding insurance to those who don't have it.

Schwarzenegger's plan, which he publicly unveiled at noon, would require employers with 10 workers or more to buy insurance for their workers or pay a fee of 4% of their payroll into a program to help provide coverage for the uninsured.

Here's an idea! Let's have the employers that are still in the state pay for it! What a great way to add jobs! What a genius.

Schwarzenegger would tax doctors 2% of their gross revenue and place a 4% tax on hospitals. He campaigned for reelection on an anti-tax platform, but his administration argues that so many more people would have insurance that medical providers would make more money.

Wait! We can tax the doctors and hospitals that provide the services too! What a great idea! That will keep the doctors here in the state and get more hospitals to open up too!
How genius I am.

The governor also wants to ban insurers from refusing to offer coverage to some individuals because of their prior medical conditions. Insurers would also have to spend at least 85% of their premium revenues on patient care, a move that would limit the amount companies spend on administrative costs and profits.

Require them to cover everyone and they'll raise the rates on everyone that is already paying for their own insurance! Man this is going to be great!

Gov. Schwarzenegger's plan, which unbelievably promises to lower costs and increase coverage, is an exercise in Orwellian logic.

"Fixing health care requires changes from all of us," said Kim Belshe, the governor's Health and Human Services secretary. The key word is "requires," which is a concept anathema to the free market, but ever-present in government, which by nature restricts, rather than frees.

The governor's $12 billion plan would require every individual to have health insurance, whether he wants it or not, and every employer of 10 or more to provide it, or pay into a state insurance fund. After promising for months no new taxes to finance his scheme, Gov. Schwarzenegger revealed Monday what he really meant: a 4 percent payroll "fee" imposed on businesses with 10 or more employees who don't conform to the mandate to buy insurance, a 4 percent "fee" on hospital revenue and a 2 percent "fee" on doctors' income.

Does anyone really think that this is the way Americans want their health care? Does he really think I want to pay for everyone else's health care?
What doctor in their right mind would stay in this state knowing that the state will screw him out of more of his money?
What hospital would open in this environment?

I can envision a lot more hospitals closing their doors here because of this system.
The CNA will start wringing their hands when their nurses find out that this pipe dream of theirs causes them to lose jobs because the cost is prohibitive.

I think it is time for me to start looking for a job in another state.

More than 9,000 sex offenders have been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials through a series of stings called Operation Predator in three years of operation, a 2006 Department of Homeland Security Report says. But some experts are wondering if the efforts are enough to protect innocent American children from being preyed on by returning criminal alien sex offenders.

Foreign nationals account for roughly 85 percent of child sex offenders arrested by the operation, which was launched by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge in July 2003, officials say. And as WND previously has reported, authorities also have linked illegal aliens to a wave of gang-rapes across the U.S.

The program was designed to safeguard children from foreign national pedophiles, human traffickers and international sex tourists, and in the first year alone, ICE arrested more than 3,200 child predators in the U.S. who committed forms of child exploitation.

But Deborah Schurman-Kauflin, a researcher of violent crimes and criminal profiler who consults with FBI, state and local police, told WND, "Illegal immigrants who commit sex crimes first cross the U.S. border illegally, then gradually commit worse crimes and are continually released back into society or deported. Those who were deported simply returned illegally again. There is a clear pattern of criminal escalation. From misdemeanors such as assault or DUI, to drug offenses, illegal immigrants who commit sex crimes break U.S. laws repeatedly."

LOS ANGELES (AP) - In a career that spanned more than six decades, Iwao Takamoto assisted in the designs of some of the biggest animated features and television shows, including "Cinderella,""Peter Pan,""Lady and the Tramp" and "The Flintstones."

But it was Takamoto's creation of Scooby-Doo, the cowardly dog with an adventurous heart, that captivated audiences and endured for generations.

Takamoto died Monday of heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Warner Bros. spokesman Gary Miereanu said. He was 81.

Born in Los Angeles to parents who had emigrated from Japan, Takamoto graduated high school when World War II began. He and his family were sent to the Manzanar internment camp in the California desert, where he learned the art of illustration from fellow internees.

Despite a lack of formal training, he landed an interview with Walt Disney Studios when he returned to Los Angeles and was hired as an apprentice.

Takamoto worked under the tutelage of Disney's "nine old men," the studio's team of legendary animators responsible for its biggest full-length films before moving to Hanna-Barbera Studios in 1961. There he worked on cartoons for television, including "Josie and the Pussy Cats,""The Great Grape Ape Show,""Harlem Globe Trotters" and "The Secret Squirrel Show."

Democrats to Challenge Bush's Iraq Plan

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush is telling lawmakers he will send thousands more U.S. troops to Iraq's two most troubled regions, in a plan that Democrats are resisting as a major escalation of a 31/2-year-old war.

Bush on Wednesday will announce a new war strategy and is expected to call for as many as 20,000 additional troops, according to several senators briefed by the president on Monday.

On Tuesday, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., said he expects Bush to announce that up to 20,000 additional troops will be sent to Iraq, but will not say how long the extra forces will be there. Levin, who spoke to reporters a day after meeting with White House national security adviser Stephen Hadley, said he thinks Bush will signal that the overall U.S. commitment in Iraq is not open-ended.

The extra forces would be sent to Baghdad, which has been consumed by sectarian violence, and the western Anbar Province, a base of the mostly Sunni insurgency and foreign al-Qaida fighters, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and others said following the session with Bush.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - A Somali official says U.S. helicopter gunships have launched new attacks against suspected al-Qaida terrorists. An earlier U.S. airstrike hit targets in southern Somalia where Islamic militants were believed to be sheltering suspects in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies, Somali officials and witnesses said Tuesday. Many people were reported killed.
Monday's attack was the first overt military action by the U.S. in Somalia since it led a U.N. force in the 1990s that intervened in Somalia in an effort to fight famine. The mission led to clashes between U.N. forces and Somali warlords, including the "Black Hawk Down" battle that left 18 U.S. servicemen dead.
Helicopter gunships launched new attacks Tuesday near the scene of a U.S. airstrike in the village of Hayi, although it was not clear if they were American or Ethiopian aircraft, and it was not known if there were any casualties.
Two helicopters "fired several rockets toward the road that leads to the Kenyan border," said Ali Seed Yusuf, a resident of the town of Afmadow in southern Somalia.
The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower arrived off Somalia's coast and launched intelligence-gathering missions over Somalia, the military said. Three other U.S. warships are conducting anti-terror operations off the Somali coast.

Scientists reported Sunday they had found a plentiful source of stem cells in the fluid that cushions babies in the womb and produced a variety of tissue types from these cells - sidestepping the controversy over destroying embryos for research.

Researchers at Wake Forest University and Harvard University reported the stem cells they drew from amniotic fluid donated by pregnant women hold much the same promise as embryonic stem cells. They reported they were able to extract the stem cells without harm to mother or fetus and turn their discovery into several different tissue cell types, including brain, liver and bone.

"Our hope is that these cells will provide a valuable resource for tissue repair and for engineered organs as well," said Dr. Anthony Atala, head of Wake Forest's regenerative medicine institute and senior researcher on the project.

It took Atala's team some seven years of research to determine the cells they found were truly stem cells that "can be used to produce a broad range of cells that may be valuable for therapy."

WASHINGTON -- As a result of lawsuits, the U.S. government released this week the actual U.S.-Mexico Social Security Totalization Agreement, an understanding signed between the Bush administration and the Mexican government in 2004 that would funnel billions of Social Security funds to Mexican citizens.

TREA Senior Citizens League, a Washington-based nonpartisan seniors group, announced this week that after Freedom of Information Act lawsuits it filed against the government, it had received the secret agreement document.

Brad Phillips, a spokesperson for TREA, told NewsMax that the language in the agreement "raises more questions than it answers — such as what is the cost and who is going to pay."

The GAO has already warned that as a result of this agreement, the number of unauthorized Mexican workers and family members eligible for social security benefits will likely increase.

When are we going to learn?

Gov. to seek insurance for all children

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will propose that all
Californian children, including those in the state illegally, be
guaranteed medical insurance as part of the healthcare overhaul he
intends to unveil next week, according to officials familiar with the
plan.

If enacted by the Legislature, his proposal would affect about 763,000
children who now lack insurance. Although the administration has not
revealed details of how it would pay for such a program, officials
estimate that extending insurance to all children could cost the state
as much as $400 million a year.

That would be a small piece of Schwarzenegger's stated goal: to ensure
medical coverage for all of the 6.5 million Californians who now have
none. Experts say that could cost upward of $10 billion a year.

Although California will not be the first to cover all children, it
has fewer employers providing insurance and more illegal immigrants
than other states, making coverage more challenging. This also means that Joe Tax Payer is the one that will be hammered. I have enough problems paying for the things that my family needs and wants. I include wants, because last time I checked, this is still a capatalist society.

Get off your dead ass and get a job, or two if necessary and pay for your own health care.

That's a pretty astonishing way to dispose of accusations about
practices that labeled "unethical, if not criminal" by one of Conyers'
own chiefs of staff - who then resigned, saying she "could not tolerate
[them] any longer."
And the fact that the committee's Republicans went along with it
speaks volumes as to why the GOP is now in the minority - not to
mention the extent of the unseemly mutual back-scratching that
permeates Capitol Hill.
Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats promised to do something about ethics once they took control of Congress.
Here's a very good place to start - by finding someone else to head the Judiciary Committee.

Wendy's Hamburger chain ran a very successful advertising campaign in
which an octogenarian (who sounded amazingly like Helen Thomas)
bellyached about the stingy amount of meat on her sandwich; "where`s the beef?"
became a nationally known slogan, and embodied the prosperity of our
nation. We were red blooded Americans, by God, proud and vigorous,
hearty appetites for red blooded all American beef!

In many ways, this advertising campaign embodied part of what it means to
be an American; beef lies at the heart of our cuisine, and was the
staple of the cowboy, the cavalrymen, the settlers on the Great Plains.
The Texas Longhorn wandering the dusty backcountry of the Lone Star
State was the symbol of American grit, American independence and
cussedness. The dairy farms with their quaint barns and quiet pastoral
scenes in Wisconsin or Iowa were a part of Americana as were the great
open ranches of Montana, or the boxcars transporting cattle across the
width and breadth of these United States.

We were left with so many unpublished letters about the U.S. military that we thought we'd take the opportunity of the holiday-shortened Christmas week to publish some more of them. We begin with one from Robert Eleazer, who tells us about a bit of recent history of which we'd been unaware:

I spent 25 years in the U.S. Air Force from 1974 to 1999 (not counting 4 years of ROTC from 1970-74). Although my family could not afford to send me to college without financial aid, and although I did not get a military scholarship, I joined because I wanted to serve my country--and the urgency to do so seemed greater to me at a time when the military was unpopular in some circles.

We need to recall that we would know about the attitudes of some leaders towards the quality of people who serve in the military even if the Vietnam War had never occurred, and if we did not have Kerrys and Rangles to remind us.
Robert Strange McNamara's attitude toward the U.S. military was well illustrated by an experiment he imposed on the armed services in the 1960s. Project 100,000 was a plan to place 100,000 retarded people and other mental cases in the military. Presumably, McNamara thought that these people had mental abilities compatible with military service.
Some of the senior officers I served under had the misfortune of having to deal with McNamara's experiment. A decade later they still shook their heads in dismay.

This sounded too crazy to be true, but sure enough, we found a February op-ed piece by Kelly Greenhill of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government that describes the program:

Four decades ago, during the Vietnam War, Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara created Project 100,000, a program intended to help the approximately 300,000 men who annually failed the Armed Forces Qualification Test for reasons of aptitude. The idea behind Mr. McNamara's scheme was that the military would annually absorb 100,000 of the country's "subterranean poor"--people who would otherwise be rejected.

Using a variety of "educational and medical techniques," the Pentagon would "salvage" these Category IV recruits first for military careers and later for more productive roles in society. Project 100,000 recruits--known as New Standards Men--would then return to civilian life with new skills and aptitudes that would allow them to "reverse the downward spiral of human decay."

Mr. McNamara further concluded that the best way to demonstrate that the induction of New Standards Men would prove beneficial was to keep their status hidden from their commanders. In other words, Project 100,000 was a blind experiment run on the military amid the escalation of hostilities in Southeast Asia.

Some 150,000 NSM were inducted by 1968. The experiment proved not just foolish but deadly:

A Project 100,000 recruit who entered the Marine Corps in 1968 was two and a half times more likely to die in combat than his higher-aptitude compatriots. After all, they tended to be the ones in the line of fire.

But Project 100,000 recruits fared poorly outside combat as well. . . . Research conducted in the late 1980's revealed that across the services Project 100,000 recruits were reassigned at rates up to 11 times greater than their peers. Likewise, 9 percent to 22 percent of these men required remedial training, as compared to only one to three percent of their higher-category counterparts in the Army, Air Force and Navy.

So the false Rangel-Kerry description of the current volunteer military as a provider of dead-end jobs to losers was, at least in part, an accurate description of the draft-era military--and by design. It's particularly perverse that Rangel calls for instituting the draft (albeit he votes against it) as a way of "solving" this problem, which in fact has not existed for 35 years.

Steve Draper explains why he enlisted:

Every one of these stories reminds me of my own.

I am your now stereotypical top-of-class full-ride law school graduate veteran. I secured all sorts of jobs that seem to indicate intelligence, working in various sorts of litigation with a major defense firm. Now, I am in senior management and am an equity participant in a multinational construction firm. But 20 years ago, I was a private in the United States Army.
A graduate of the Special Forces Qualification Course, I met many bright people in the Army. I met people who were extremely intelligent. I met people with vast stores of wisdom. I met them in higher concentrations than in any other setting I have ever experienced. I met them on equal ground, wearing the same uniform, obeying the same oath. And now those people are spread across all dimensions. My comrades who stayed in, those who left, my grandfather who is now dead but who once shared admiration for my military accomplishments and I for his, my father who gave me his silver jump wings to wear when I graduated jump school more than two decades after he did--we all share an experience that, to a person, is deeply felt and sincere. And this experience does not have one damn thing to do with "opportunity" when opportunity is defined as money.
I think the representative must have misspoken. He must have meant that those who forgo "opportunity" to serve should be treasured assets who should be carefully and reluctantly deployed. This would have supported his argument on Iraq. And even if we disagree on the practice, we would agree on the premise.
But generally, there is the notion that the military is nothing but underclass idiots. Sure, they can deploy thousands of miles away and coordinate military assaults that are so precise and so technically driven that relatively small concentrations of our troops can defeat an entire nation's organized army in days. But still, they are manipulated idiots, according to the popular theory. This is wrong. Even if you disagree with the president's decision to attack Iraq, or more wisely the implementation of our plan after military victory over the Iraqi army, this does not mean the troops doing the work are idiots. Most of them are not; many of them are quite smart; almost all of them are decent folk who understand that the concepts of freedom and justice must be secured on the ground if they are to be real.
For me the service of my father, my grandfather, even General Washington called me to serve too. I wanted to earn the right to be in the same class of people as these men. Money could come later, when the important things were done. I have never, ever regretted that choice.

Robert Drake didn't join by choice, but he found military life anything but a dead end:

I was drafted in June 1967, as a high school dropout. I went to Vietnam as an infantryman, in November 1967. I was a high school dropout because I had no parental direction or discipline. I got both in the service.

After being wounded in Vietnam and spending six months on the burn ward at Brooke Army Medical in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, I was transferred to Fort Hood, Texas. I got my high school diploma while at Fort Hood and re-enlisted to get into Air Defense Artillery. I did not go to school for this military occupational specialty; I had to learn about Nike Hercules and self-propelled Hawk missiles while on the job. I spent the next seven years learning my job while stationed at Highlands Army Air Defense Site in New Jersey and at Grafenwohr, Germany.
I spent the next 25 or so years working for the Postal Service and raising a family, I'm a blue collar kinda guy, but I'm no dummy. Upon my retirement from the Postal Service after 9/11, I was too old to go back in the service and help out with the terrorist problem so I did the next best thing I could. I secured a job with the state of Pennsylvania and became a police officer--that's right, a first responder in homeland security--and I graduated 16th in my State Police Academy class. I'm no rocket scientist, but I'll serve this country till my dying day if need be.

Laura Townsend captures one reason the Rangel and Kerry comments are so infuriating:

I was outraged by the Rangel crowd's depiction of our military as unintelligent for many reasons, and many of them obvious. Some of the brightest folks I have met have served in our armed services, and I think I'd recognize intelligence when I'm in confronted by it--I got into college at age 12 myself.

But I'm also mad about the issue from two other perspectives. One, the ability of liberals to be so inherently hypocritical and get away with it, which relates to reason No. 2: I was raised that involvement in polite society meant you shouldn't judge hardworking folks for their intellectual acumen. It should be enough that they are contributing. If Republicans were demeaning the intelligence of Hispanics working the counter at McDonald's, we'd have no end of the outcry about insensitivity and stereotyping.
For my money, whatever your IQ, if you choose a job in which you may have to dodge bullets and sidestep land mines and bombs on behalf of other people, you deserve respect. Rangel and Kerry and those who insinuate that individuals without other choices join the military had better watch out. I've always heard that those who can't lawyer, lead or otherwise cut it, run for office.

Jeremy Leese overcame his own mother's resistance to his desire to serve:

I'd like to have 20 minutes with Rep. Rangel so I could explain to him how wrong he is. I'd like to tell him how my mother begged me not to enlist in the Army. How she insisted I was too smart and that we had money to pay for any college I wanted to attend. But I enlisted anyway, and my heart was broken when she wept when she realized I could not be deterred from joining.

I would like to try to explain to him that the proudest day of my life was they day I learned I was going to be given the opportunity to serve my country in the first Gulf War with the Second Armored Cavalry Regiment.
I would like to let him know that after I left the Army and graduated with a B.S. in computer science, my only thought was receiving a commission as an officer in our military so I could continue to serve.
And I would like to try to explain to him why I cried soon after learning that a medical condition discovered at my physical meant I had lost the slot in officer candidate school I had been selected for. I want to try to explain to him why that was the worst day of my life, even though it meant I would be taking a job in the private sector that paid twice the money I would have made as second lieutenant.
I want to believe I could make him understand how wrong he is about this. Being allowed to serve with some of the finest Americans I have ever known was the greatest honor that I could ever receive.

Master Sgt. Jacqueline Davis is no dummy:

For what's it's worth, I have a tested IQ of 136, which, the Internet tells me, makes me in the top 2.5% of the U.S. population. My degrees, courtesy of the GI Bill, are in history and anthropology. I am a Florida cracker, grew up below the poverty line, and am the first person in my family to graduate from college.

I joined the Army in July 1971. I joined the Army Reserve in 1974, two days after I got out of the regular Army. I "retired" from the Reserve in May 2004--32 years and 10 months altogether. (Reservists don't get retirement until age 60.)
I joined the Army because I was tired of school (summer honors classes, scholarship to Florida State), because I didn't have any real job skills and I knew I would eventually want to finish my degree. The Army trained me to type, which has guaranteed me a job my whole life, gave me responsibilities and experience beyond what a normal 19-year-old female would get in 1971, and provided me with the GI Bill.
I joined the Reserve because it was a worthy thing to do and I enjoyed being around military folk.
I stayed in the Reserve during the crisis in Iran. I had two small children by then, and really had to search my soul to discover what I would do if activated. I decided that the Army had lived up to its promises to me, and it might be time for me to live up to my promise to it. And I didn't see too many other people looking to support our government.
I didn't get called up, and I still stayed in. I realized we also serve who stand and wait--I'd be there when and if the Army wanted me.
I came close to being called up during Desert Storm.
I did get called up for what was supposed to be the last rotation into Bosnia.
I did get called up for the fifth rotation into Afghanistan. I was a grandmother celebrating her 52nd birthday at Bagram Air Base. (I got a roll of toilet paper as a gift. It was a very thoughtful gift from some Vietnam vets.)
I joined because I wanted to take advantage of what the Army had to offer. I stayed because the most important I have done in my life is to be part of that thin line that stands between the unique, amazing dream that is America and those who would destroy it.

Rangel and Kerry's attitudes are shared by some young people, as evidenced by this story from the Daily Collegian, student newspaper of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst:

A University of Massachusetts anti-war activist wants to restart the draft and throw military recruiters off campus.

"I think it's inherently immoral for [the ROTC] to be recruiting on campus, given that they're basically recruiting people for the occupations overseas," declared Jeffrey Napolitano, Graduate Student Senate president and member of the UMass Anti-War Coalition. . . .

"Universities should not support military aggression on their campus," Napolitano said. "I think it's fundamentally in opposition to the role and purpose of a university." . . .

"If there is going to be a military, then there needs to be a draft," he said. "It's a democratic way of ensuring that the military is representative of the people," and a potential brake to adventurous politicians seeking to stoke conflict without citizen review.

So he doesn't want his peers to have the option of joining the military through ROTC, but he does want to force others to join. This email from Lt. Col. David Dawson serves as a nice rejoinder:

For the past 20 years I have been telling people the following: "I attended a New England prep school (Loomis Chaffee) and an Ivy League College (Cornell). Since I joined the Marine Corps, I have associated with a better class of person."

Bipartisan Effort to Draft Immigration Bill

Counting on the support of the new Democratic majority in Congress,
Democratic lawmakers and their Republican allies are working on
measures that could place millions of illegal immigrants on a more
direct path to citizenship than would a bill that the Senate passed in
the spring.

The lawmakers are considering abandoning a requirement in the Senate
bill that would compel several million illegal immigrants to leave the
United States before becoming eligible to apply for citizenship.

The lawmakers are also considering denying financing for 700 miles of fencing along the border with Mexico, a law championed by Republicans that passed with significant Democratic support.

Details of the bill, which would be introduced early next year, are
being drafted. The lawmakers, who hope for bipartisan support, will
almost certainly face pressure to compromise on the issues from some
Republicans and conservative Democrats.

Meetings in Washington last Thursday between rock star Bono and Democrats, including Senate leader Harry Reid of Nevada, yielded a nice photo-op but not much else, according to Bono.

Bono, the U2 frontman and anti-poverty activist, was on Capitol Hill to seek assurances that $1 billion in planned U.S. spending to fight AIDS and malaria in Africa would not be lost if Congress freezes agency budgets in the coming year.

Bono said he also was seeking to close a "commitment gap" between what President Bush has requested for anti-poverty efforts and what Congress has agreed to spend in the past.

After meetings with incoming Senate Majority Leader Reid, House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee, Bono said he came away empty-handed.

"I'm alarmed we could not get a commitment from the Democratic leadership to prevent the loss of $1 billion in the continuing resolution," Bono said Thursday in a statement.

A long time ago I read a short online piece about how women could get their men to put the toilet seat down. Inherent in it was the idea that this was an example of men’s lack of consideration and that the task at hand was one of disciplining these bad boys. I don’t know, my attitude is that if women can leave a toilet seat down, men can leave it up.

Of course, this is just a silly, pebble-in-the-shoe issue, but I see it as a metaphor for a modern phenomenon: The casting of women’s characteristic behaviors as the norm and men’s as dysfunctional deviations.

This is strikingly obvious with the topic of “communication.” Man has long known that women were the more loquacious sex, and you’ve probably heard of studies to this effect. A recent book states that women have about 20,000 “communication events” (I love these terms the psycho-babblers conjure up) a day, versus about 7,000 for men. But this is nothing new; who didn’t know a bevy of garrulous girls in school?

What is new is the assumption that this imputes superiority to women. Communication has become one of the buzzwords of modern psychology. And, whenever relationships are at issue – be it in a book, article, talk or interview – almost invariably an “expert” will inform us of two things. One is that women communicate more than men. The other is that an onus belongs on men as this “handicap” of theirs is an impediment to good relations. Why, men need to learn to communicate more and share their feelings, we’re told.

Did anyone ever think that maybe women communicate too darn much?

Sixty years ago, at
the invitation of President Harry Truman, Winston Churchill delivered
his historic Iron Curtain address in Fulton, Missouri, to warn
Americans of the menace they faced in the Soviet Union. On Monday, U.N.
Secretary General Kofi Annan gave his valedictory speech at the Truman
Library in Independence to instruct Americans about the principles of
global leadership and their need for the United Nations. The comparison
says a lot about Mr. Annan's legacy and the current state of the U.N.

America, Mr. Annan said, "has
historically been at the vanguard of the global human rights
movements. When it appears to abandon its own ideals and objects,
its friends abroad are naturally troubled and confused." That was a
slap at the Bush Administration, which must be wondering what it got
from Mr. Annan after coming to his political rescue last year amid Paul
Volcker's Oil for Food revelations. But leaving aside this foray into
U.S. politics, how have Mr. Annan and the U.N. met their own "ideals
and objects"?

When Mr. Annan was named Secretary
General 10 years ago, he did so as the U.S.-backed candidate of reform.
Jesse Helms, then-chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
told Mr. Annan that "if you choose to be an agent of real and
deep-seated change, you will find many supporters--and even
allies--here in the U.S. Congress."

Senator Helms's expectations were
not met. Seven years later--thanks to U.S. military action that Mr.
Annan did everything in his power to prevent--we learned that he had
presided over the greatest bribery scheme in history, known as Oil for
Food. We learned that Benon Sevan, Mr. Annan's trusted confidant in
charge of administering the program, had himself been a beneficiary of
Iraqi kickbacks to the tune of $160,000. We learned that Mr. Annan's
chief of staff, Iqbal Riza, had ordered potentially incriminating
documents to be destroyed. We learned that Mr. Annan and his deputy,
Louise Frechette, were both aware of the kickback scheme but failed to
report it to the Security Council, as their fiduciary duties required.
However, we haven't yet learned whether the senior Annan illegally
helped his son Kojo obtain a discounted Mercedes, an issue on which the
Secretary General has stonewalled reporters.

The UN is a waste of time and money.

They have been useless since 1953.

Kick them out of this country and stop funding that useless organization.

I'd gone to FAO Schwarz with a friend and her three small children;
while they shopped for stuffed animals, I wandered over to recapture
some of the innocence of my childhood. What a mistake.

Just
feet from the Etch-A-Sketches and paint-by-numbers were dolls dressed
in garter belts, bustiers, fishnet stockings and high heels. "Ella" was
in a teddy; "Justine" in an evening gown with her breasts overflowing.
Cleavage and lingerie were the order of the day.

As small
children filed by, I felt myself panicking, wanting to cover their eyes
or steer them away, as if they were going to be exposed to something
they weren't meant to see. Never mind that they were the target
audience for these hyper-sexualized dolls. I was, after all, in a toy
store.

A 4-year-old girl was mesmerized by one of the dolls
with the flowing cleavage. Next to her was another doll wearing just a
black bra and panties, set on a mini sofa, with legs splayed. The
girl's father mindlessly pulled her away, seemingly unconcerned.

A Clarion County soldier was killed when he threw himself on a grenade to protect the lives of his fellow soldiers, relatives said Wednesday.

Pfc. Ross A. McGinnis, 19, of Knox, was the gunner in a Humvee patrolling in Baghdad on Monday when someone on a rooftop threw a grenade into the vehicle.

Tom McGinnis, of nearby Paint, said his son's unit commander told him Ross McGinnis knew he didn't have time to throw the grenade out of the Humvee.

"He lay down on it on his back, trying to cover it with his body armor," Tom McGinnis said.

The Army told him four other soldiers in the Humvee suffered minor injuries in the blast.

An Army spokesman said he couldn't confirm the details of McGinnis' death until the Army finishes the routine investigation it conducts for any combat casualty.

Rebecca McGinnis said her son drew a soldier in kindergarten when he was supposed to picture what he wanted to be when he grew up.

"Ross decided at a very young age that he wanted to join the Army," she said.

On his 17th birthday -- the first day he was eligible -- Ross McGinnis stepped into the recruiting station and joined the Army through the Delayed Enlistment Program, she said.

During his infantry training, the left-handed McGinnis qualified as an expert shooting left-handed and as a sharpshooter -- one step below expert -- shooting right-handed, she said.

His physical proficiency was no surprise to his parents, who said Ross McGinnis was bright but restless and wasn't a stellar student.

"He wasn't academic," his mother said. "He was hands on."

Tom McGinnis said his son's passions - other than the Army - were video games and mountain biking. He later became a car enthusiast while taking automotive technology at the Clarion County Career Center.

"He was always outside, going. He couldn't sit still," Tom McGinnis said.

Ross McGinnis graduated from Keystone Junior-Senior High School in 2005. Principal Vicky Walters said the news of McGinnis' death shocked the small school.

"The teachers who knew him are very distraught," she said.

Brent Johnson, the automotive instructor at the career center, said McGinnis became an "outstanding student" in his class, participated in the student congress and served as secretary/treasurer for the automotive department.

"Ross was the type of student that made me proud to be a teacher," Johnson said. "He will be greatly missed."

The family is still discussing funeral arrangements with the Army.

Academe Shortchanges Conservatives

Most people already realize this, but it seems that no one really cares in the halls of Academe.

Professor Bauerlein brings it home.

Mark Bauerlein, a professor of English at Emory University, has an interesting article in The Chronicle of Higher Education: "How Academe Shortchanges Conservative Thinking:"

The absence of conservative minds from the liberal-arts curriculum and
the off-campus ignorance of them — or worse, treatment of them as hired
hands — are standard features of intellectual life, and they are not
unrelated. When it comes to ideas and values, campuses remain the
foremost site of study, and the curriculum has a certifying effect. It
bears the duty of imparting ideas and writings essential to the
formation of thoughtful, informed individuals. The campus provides a
space in which that can happen, an occasion for learning — not for
advocating or using knowledge, but for acquiring and reflecting upon
it. The ideas included are deemed suitable for academic study, which is
to say they possess enough autonomy to be handled as part of an
intellectual tradition.
The division of campus discourse from public discourse has a
discrediting result. If a set of ideas and writings are missing in the
classroom but present in the marketplace or government, we tend to
explain them by their instrumental value. They owe their clout to their
usefulness to business or politics, the reasoning goes, not to
intellectual substance. If the university doesn't put those works and
ideas on the syllabus, they aren't subject to the free analysis and
contemplation that respectable works and ideas merit. When they crop up
off campus, then, they seem to have no independent validity, no import
separate from the interests they satisfy.
This is a disabling situation for conservative intellectuals. When a
distinctive intellectual identity emerged 100 years ago in France, it
did so as an adversarial one. People qualified as intellectuals by
acquiring knowledge through education and extending their expertise
into protest, rising above the blandishments of money and position to
represent higher things. What kept them honest and credible was,
precisely, their independence. What kept them authoritative was the
fact that they had developed their opinions in a disinterested setting.
Herein lies the plight of conservative intellectuals. They seek to
reflect upon the events of the day, but the ideas they draw upon are
ignored by professors and cheapened by liberal intellectuals. Count the
names Hayek, Russell Kirk, Irving Kristol, etc., on syllabi in courses
on "Culture Society." Tally how often, in left-of-center
periodicals, those names are linked to moneyed interests. The framing
is complete. Heralds of conservatism start and finish in the messy
realm of politics and finance, never rising into the temple of
reflection...
...The denial of legitimacy creates a distorted intellectual
environment, and everyone suffers. American society, not to mention
students, is poorly served when ideas in the public sphere don't
undergo conceptual, historical, and political analysis in the
classroom. Unfortunately, the curricular attention that conservative
minds and ideas actually gather is reflexive and shallow. It's not even
an adversarial relationship. It's barely any relationship at all.

NEW YORK — New York City college students who share a community room named for an escaped cop killer called the fugitive their hero Tuesday as the school's officials demanded the removal of the honor.

A handful of campus groups at the City College of New York commended the school for allowing them to work in the name of domestic "terrorist" Assata Shakur, now believed to be hiding in Cuba.

"We know that many Black people that fought for better conditions in the 70's were framed," the groups said in a statement released to FOXNews.com. "We consider Assata Shakur to be one of the people who were wrongfully and purposefully framed for her activities.

"And we consider her a hero and role model for standing up for our people and putting her life on the line."

The chancellor of City University of New York, meanwhile, demanded the "unauthorized and inappropriate signage" be removed.

Why did it take so long for the Chancellor to decide that this needed to be removed?

What is the university system teaching the young people of this nation?

University's should be for academics and not political BS.

The grounded imams incident at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International
Airport has been a public relations coup for the imams, their
supporters and their claims that the group's only suspicious activity
was saying evening prayers.
US
Airways continues to defend its crew's decision to pull the imams off a
plane last month, saying they took the seating configuration used by
9/11 hijackers, requested seat-belt extensions that could be used as
weapons and otherwise raised concerns.
Who are the parties involved here, who seem so interested in linking airport security with racial bigotry?
The
Council on American-Islamic Relations, the imams' legal representative,
is an organization that "we know has ties to terrorism," Sen. Charles
Schumer, D-N.Y., said in 2003. And the Muslim American Society, which
is also supporting the imams? It's the American arm of the Muslim
Brotherhood, according to the Chicago Tribune, which called it "the
world's most influential Islamic fundamentalist group."
How
about Omar Shahin, the imams' spokesman and also president of the North
American Imams Federation? He is a native of Jordan, who says he became
a U.S. citizen in 2003. From 2000 to 2003, Shahin served as president
of Islamic Center of Tucson (ICT), that city's largest mosque.

AP and Jamilgate

Historian and Army infantry officer Robert Bateman, using the latest AP
scandal over its six burning Sunnis report as a hook, has a must-read reminder in the NYPost today about the botched war reporting of the Associated Press:

The most powerful media institution in all of human history is the
Associated Press. Its news feed is ubiquitous - used, directly or
indirectly, by every U.S. newspaper and TV news program and a vast
number of foreign ones, too. AP maintains the largest world-wide
coverage, and its reader base is nearly immeasurable. Unfortunately,
and repeatedly of late, this behemoth has not only been getting it
wrong - but increasingly refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing.
Instead, acting more like a politician or the mega-corporation that
it is, the AP crew spins, obfuscates and attacks. Now they're at it
again in Iraq.
I have got direct experience of this - from challenging the AP's
seriously flawed 1999 "scoop" about the masssacre near the South Korean
village of No Gun Ri during the opening days of the Korean War.
Bad things did happen at No Gun Ri, of this there can be no doubt.
My own research and other historians', as well as the joint U.S.-Korean
government investigation, confirms that a tragedy occurred - there were
civilians who were killed there, by our side, and that was wrong.
But the AP's sensationalistic story painted it as a deliberate massacre, done with machine guns at extremely close range.
The most sensational account started in the 57th paragraph of the
3,448-word story, sourced to one Edward Daily. As AP told it, Daily was
the only soldier at No Gun Ri who directly received orders from his
officers to turn his water-cooled .30 caliber machinegun on the
civilians and shoot them down in cold blood at point-blank range.
Daily's account was chilling. It was also - as AP should have known - a fantasy.
The AP story took at face value Daily's claims that he was a combat
infantryman who won a battlefield commission just a few days after the
events at No Gun Ri, and had been awarded the Distinguished Cross and
three Purple-Hearts.
In reality, he was an enlisted mechanic in an entirely different
unit, nowhere near No Gun Ri. He had fabricated his biography and
credentials as well as his entire account of the events at No Gun Ri.
When I later confronted AP editors with the facts and records that
showed their source Daily to be a fraud, they blew me off. What would a
historian know about this topic after all, or a soldier?
The AP didn't issue a retraction, or even attempt to reinvestigate;
and it certainly didn't withdraw the story from the Pulitzer
competition. Instead, it attacked the messenger.

Bob Owens looks at the magnitude of the AP's Jamilgate:

This developing Associated Press implosion may go back as far as two
years, affecting as many as 60 stories from just this one allegedly
fake policeman alone. And Jamil Hussein is just one of more than a
dozen potentially fake Iraqi policemen used in news reports the AP
disseminates around the world. This does not begin to attempt to
account for non-offical sources which the AP will have an even harder
time substantiating. Quite literally, almost all AP reporting from Iraq
not verified from reporters of other news organizations is now suspect,
and with good reason.
Instead of affecting one show on one network watched by 14 million
viewers as Rathergate did, "Jamilgate" means the Associated Press may
have been delivering news of questionable accuracy to one billion
people a day for two years or more. In this evolving instance of faux
journalism, "60 Minutes" is now potentially 60 billion false
impressions, or more.
A principled, professional news organization owes its consumers the
truth. To date, the Associated Press, as voiced by comments from
officers international editor John Daniszewski and executive editor
Kathleen Carroll, has refused to address the rampant inconsistencies in
the "burning men" story, produce physical evidence proving their
allegations, or produce star source Iraqi Police Captain Jamil Hussein.
Arrogantly, they attack the messenger (both U.S military and Iraqi
government sources and bloggers), and insist we must believe them, even
though they give us no compelling reason to do so, and many reasons to
doubt them.

WASHINGTON - The Iraq Study Group report delivered to President Bush
yesterday contains 79 separate recommendations - but not one that
explains how American forces can defeat the terrorist insurgents, only
ways to bring the troops home.
Declaring the situation "grave and deteriorating," the
high-powered commission proposed the United States talk directly to
terror abettors Iran and Syria to get their cooperation, and commit to
removing U.S. combat troops in early 2008.

I think the Iraq panel is a joke as well.

Yesterday, 7 December 1941-a date which will live in infamy-the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government had deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives were lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Wake Island.

This morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

In New York City, blacks committed 62 percent of all murders, rapes, robberies, and assaults from 1998 to 2000, according to victim and witness identification, even though they make up only 25 percent of the city’s population. Whites committed 8 percent of those crimes over that period, though they are 28 percent of New York residents. These proportions have been stable for years and remain so today. It’s not the “criminal-justice system” that has broken down for young black males; it’s families and other sources of cultural support. Changing the subject and blaming the police just perpetuates the problem.

Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have made clear that overturning President Bush’s embryonic-stem-cell-research-funding policy will be high on their agenda when they take the reins of the Congress. So come January, it seems we are in for yet another performance of the great stem-cell drama on Capitol Hill.

Opponents of the president’s funding policy have by now repeated their lines in this drama so often that every observer has come to know them by heart: It seems 100 million people are sick (every third American?), only embryonic stem cells can help them (based on what proof?), and by insisting on withholding taxpayer dollars from newly derived lines of cells, President Bush is preventing progress and cures, and causing American scientists to fall behind their counterparts abroad.

This bizarre morality tale is told and retold ad nauseam, and has surely sunk in. But now and then, some fragment of fact breaks through the din and threatens the narrative, and for just a brief moment — before that fact, too, is pushed to the side — it seems like the story might fall apart.

The latest such troublesome truth has to do with what is usually the final piece of the great stem-cell narrative: that American scientists are falling behind foreigners because of the Bush-administration’s funding policy. That policy, let us recall, does provide (and for the first time) funding for embryonic-stem-cell research, but only for lines of cells that existed before the policy came into effect, not for those created after. That way, taxpayer dollars (more than $100 million so far) can advance the research, but without encouraging the ongoing destruction of human embryos.

Again the MSM doesn't even mention the study.
Anything that is anti-liberal does not get reported.

Navy scuttles plan to commission warship here, citing local politics

Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans to commission the Makin Island, the Navy's newest and most powerful warship, in San Francisco in 2008 because of a perception that the city is anti-military.

Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of a high-powered committee that was to support a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island, said he has been informed that the ship would not be commissioned in San Francisco, as scheduled, but in San Diego.

Myatt said he had been told that the Navy was concerned about San Francisco's refusal to provide a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, and for the city school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in San Francisco high schools.

One of the factors that turned the Pentagon against San Francisco, he said, was widely quoted anti-military remarks made by various city politicians. Some of the remarks got considerable attention, especially ones made by Gerardo Sandoval, a member of the Board of Supervisors, who was quoted on national television as saying national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard.''

"We Support Our Troops...When They Shoot Their Officers"

If there’s one slogan that’s come to represent the anti-war movement in its current incarnation, it’s one that appeared on a banner in a March 15 demonstration in San Francisco. It bore the message,“We Support Our Troops, When They Shoot Their Officers.” This banner has been seen around the world and cited in more than 400 publications.

You can see the creator of the banner in the photograph; he’s the one on the right wearing the black ski-mask (being assisted by activist Kevin Keating). He recently spoke with me about the mythology that’s grown up around it. As much as “Mike” would have liked to show the human face behind the ski-mask, he couldn’t allow his real name or any other personal information to be published because he’s going through a background check. (And if he passes, the system is definitely broken.)

Battleship Brouhaha

BAGHDAD, April 26, 2006 – While success in Iraq's march to freedom would mean good things for most of its neighbors, Iran could only view that as a failure, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said here today.
Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are here to meet with U.S. and Iraqi officials.
"A successful Iraq that is at peace with its neighbors and that has a government that's representative of the various elements within the country would represent an enormous success for this region," Rumsfeld said. "It would add to prosperity for the region. It would be something that all of the neighbors would benefit from, except Iran.
"Iran's view of the world is quite different," he continued, "and (a successful democracy in Iraq) would represent a failure from the standpoint of Iran."

I think this is one of the reasons that Iran is trying so hard to develop a nuclear capability and has had its hands in the insurgency within Iraq from the jump.

Iran is a growing threat to world peace and if it is not dealt with through diplomatic channels, as it is being attempted at the moment, I see this as becoming a failure, then we will end up at war with them. This may happen sooner than most of us want, but I suspect it will come to fruition.

British intelligence sources increasingly suspect that Alexander Litvinenko, the former spy killed with a radioactive poison, was the victim of a plot involving "rogue elements" within the Russian state, the Guardian has learned.
While ruling out any official involvement by Vladimir Putin's government, investigators believe that only those with access to state nuclear laboratories could have mounted such a sophisticated plot.
Police were last night closing in on a group of men who entered the UK among a large crowd of Muscovite football fans. The group of five or more arrived shortly before Mr Litvinenko fell ill and attended the CSKA Moscow match against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium on November 1. They flew back shortly afterwards. While describing them only as witnesses, police believe their presence could hold the key to the former spy's death.
